The average hair length of a whitetail buck or doe tail is 3". Tails with this length hair is the norm in both white and dyed colors, so these are longer than average. Hair texture runs from very straight to wavy. Like the hair on the body of a winter coat whitetail, no two tails are alike. Most tiers request straight hair for trout streamers. Wavey hair is a good choice for small to medium length saltwater patterns and all around patterns such as Clouser Minnow. Although the wavey hair doesn't look as good in the vise, the action in the water makes up for that by a considerable margin. On most bucktails regardless of hair length, only the top two thirds of the tail should be used. The hair near the base of the tail is "transitional hair", very similar to the rump hair of the whitetail which the coarsest hair on the whitetail. This coarse hair will flare far more, even with moderate flat thread pressure, than what will work for tieing a properly proportioned streamer.
